'Reserved' hiring climate expected in Barrie this spring: Manpower

Employment prospects are ahead of the curve in the Western Cape, Gauteng and Free State as South African employers report conservative hiring plans for the second quarter of 2019.

Province-wide, Alberta can expect a nine pre cent increase in hiring.

On a global basis, hiring intentions remain positive for the second quarter, with 40 of 44 countries surveyed in the report planning to increase headcount.

Linda Teo, Country Manager of ManpowerGroup Singapore, comments on the upbeat hiring outlook for the services sector specifically: "Optimistic about business prospects, companies specialising in digitisation software and other digital services are hiring more actively than ever to secure talent specialising in software development and e-commerce".

"Ultimately the biggest piece of insight I can give is for job seekers to understand the skills gap, understand that there is work out there, but understanding what you're skill set versus what's skill set that's needed and bridging that gap", Borhot said. Net employment outlooks are also strong for wholesale and retail trade, at 24%, as consumers dine out and demand immediate delivery from groceries to fast fashion.

To calculate the net employment outlook of +11% above, the percentage of employers expecting an increase was first taken, from which the percentage of those anticipating a decrease was subtracted.

Some industries are seeing a marked improvement over previous quarters.

Hiring activity in Singapore is expected to remain modest in Q2 2019, with employers reporting a seasonally-adjusted net employment outlook of +11%.

Adding to the sense of pressure, the downbeat Finance and Business Services sector has fallen five points to -1% in what is only the second time in the last decade it has been in negative territory.

It was one of the two sectors that have weaker hiring prospects in the upcoming quarter. A considerable decline of 16 percentage points is reported for the Restaurants & Hotels sector, while Outlooks are 10 and 6 percentage points weaker in the Manufacturing sector and the Transport, Storage & Communications sector, respectively.

"The best candidates will often have the pick of a number of different jobs or temporary assignments at any one time; in a battle to attract and hold on to top talent, employers must ensure their salaries and benefits packages are in line with or exceed the trends in the region", Mr Greaves added. "It is also a four percentage point increase from the Outlook reported during the same time a year ago, indicating a positive hiring pace for the upcoming months".
