  • Lori Loughlin When Calls the Heart

Mr Singer is scheduled to plead guilty on Tuesday in Boston Federal Court to charges including racketeering, money laundering and obstruction of justice, according to court papers.

Her husband, actor William H. Macy, has not been charged, although an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent stated in an affidavit that he was in the room when Huffman first heard the pitch from a scam insider.

Loughlin was out of town at the time due to filming but has since turned herself in to authorities. Her husband, the designer Mossimo Gianulli, is also charged with fraud, and appeared in court in Los Angeles on Tuesday before being released on $1 million bail.

The consultant also hired ringers to take college entrance exams for students and paid off insiders at testing centers to correct students' answers, they said.

The two are among 50 people charged for taking part in the largest such scam in US history, which the scheme's mastermind said in court documents steered some 800 students into elite universities including Yale, Georgetown and Stanford by cheating the admissions process.

Federal prosecutors in Boston charged William "Rick" Singer, 58, with running the scheme through his Edge College & Career Network, which charged up to $2.5 million per child for the services, which were masked as contributions to a scam charity.

Meanwhile, celebrities have jumped on social media to comment on the nationwide college admissions scam and the alleged involvement of two of their own, Huffman and Loughlin.

Prosecutors alleged the couple gave $500,000 to have their two daughters labelled as recruits to the rowing team at USC (University of Southern California), even though neither participated in the sport.

Singer pleaded guilty and his lawyer, Donald Heller, said that his client intends to cooperate fully with prosecutors and is "remorseful and contrite, and wants to move on with his life".

United States attorney Andrew Lelling said: "These parents are a catalogue of wealth and privilege".

Wendy said Lori and her husband are supposedly the worst of the bunch and questioned what would happen to her rebooted series, Fuller House.

Several defendants, including Huffman, were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Some of the other universities targeted in the scam include Yale, Stanford and Georgetown.

The colleges themselves are not targets, the prosecutor said. None of the schools or the students have been charged in the case.
