Trump's ex-lawyer Cohen says testimony 'could have been clearer': lawyer

  • Former Trump personal attorney Cohen departs after House Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington

The Democratic chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Wednesday that he will not attempt to punish Michael Cohen for misleading the committee last month when he claimed he'd never asked President Trump for a pardon.

Monico explained, though, that Cohen's testimony "could have been clearer and more complete".

But the new letter from Monico is unlikely to satisfy Republicans, who have charged Cohen may have committed perjury in his testimony.

This week, Michael Monico, another member of Cohen's current legal team, penned a letter to House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., saying that Cohen "stands by his statement".

During his testimony, Cohen told the committee: "I have never asked for, nor would I accept, a pardon from President Trump".

Cohen's lawyers have previously admitted that another lawyer acting on behalf of Cohen, also a lawyer, did sound out the president's lawyers.

Cohen's February 27 declaration that "I have never asked for, nor would I accept, a pardon from President Trump" set off a firestorm that culminated in Trump calling him a liar on Twitter. They said Cohen lied when he claimed he did not want a position in the Trump administration and that he did not seek a pardon from his former boss.

'Bad lawyer and fraudster Michael Cohen said under sworn testimony that he never asked for a Pardon, ' Trump tweeted.

"In light of mounting evidence, it appears Cohen likely lied under oath during his appearance before the Committee", they added, noting that California Rep. Katie Hill, a Democrat, said in an interview Sunday that she expected Cummings to refer Cohen for prosecution.

They said federal prosecutors in NY say Cohen sought employment in the Trump administration - something Cohen repeatedly denied in the hearing.

Monico said Cohen had asked his previous lawyer to ask about a possible pardon after an FBI raid on his New York City home, office and hotel room in April 2018 because Trump had 'publicly dangled the possibility of pardons when commenting about ongoing investigations'.

'As I have said in the past, the president has the right to, and that doesn't mean he won't consider it when the investigation is over, ' Giuliani said.

Cohen is set to report to prison in early May for what a federal judge described as a "veritable smorgasbord" of crimes, including lying to Congress.

All three have been charged in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign.
