  • Weekend Sweep for Kyle Busch at Phoenix

Kyle Busch held on for his first win of the year, claiming victory at the TicketGuardian 500.

This puts Busch in a class of his own to start the 2019 Cup series, as he i the only driver to finish all four races in the top 10 so far this season.

"I knew...before we went green with however many to go that we were going to be right on the verge", Busch said. "Once I got to Blaney, I was able to kind of save a little bit and try to take care of my tires for the rest of the traffic I had to get through".

Last weekend in Las Vegas, Busch won both the Truck Series and Xfinity races to set up the potential for a rare three-race sweep - a feat only he has accomplished, doing so twice at Bristol during his career.

"It's not for me to worry about".

"That's not for me to worry about, it's for everyone else to discuss and talk about", Busch said. "For myself and the career that I've had, I've been fortunate to be around a lot of top people and a lot of great sponsors".

Kyle Busch won the Ticket Guardian 500 from ISM Raceway on Sunday afternoon.

There would be no such mistakes this time around, as Busch earned the 12th two-race sweep of his career.

Even after victory outside Phoenix, Busch was still ruing what might have been. The additional 750 horsepower combined with more downforce has created more speed, but it has also made passing hard and that could mean restarts are crucial.

"This makes last week feel so much stupider. But we'll take what we got today".

Martin Truex Jr. of Joe Gibbs Racing finished second and Ryan Blaney third. Blaney wound up third after starting on the pole, and after having to make two stops during the final caution because of a lugnut that would have come loose.

"I was kind of riding, trying to save tires and save gas, and they were telling me we were really close on gas", he said.

Busch said he was not thinking about that milestone.

Still, it was a momentum building result for Blaney, who had watched Team Penske teammates Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski reach victory lane the past two weeks.

Kyle Busch easily could have laid claim to being the top Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver not driving a Team Penske Ford through the first three races of the 2019 season. That would have been pretty awesome, to start this year with two weekend sweeps in a row! "This is what we deserve". Aric Almirola and Denny Hamlin completed the Top 5. "But we'll just take what we got today at ISM Raceway". I didn't want to run out and finish 20th.

As happy as Busch was with the win, he also gave himself some grief because it could easily have given him a second straight weekend sweep.

Chase Elliott rallied to ninth by the end of the stage after getting slapped with a pass-through penalty by edging Blaney at the start-finish line at the beginning of the race.
