  • Android 10 beta rolls out

Ahead of its first public unveiling, Google has made the first beta version of Android 10 "Q" available to download and install.

Although it's aimed at developers, you can get the Android Beta 1 preview build on your Pixel 3/3Xl, Pixel 2/XL, and on your original Pixel and Pixel XL.

Google's shown off its schedule for beta releases and the final version in a handy timeline. Here's the site where you can download them.

Along with some neat new features Google is also getting ready for the explosion in foldable phones by including native support for these bendy devices. In the past, you could either grant or deny location access for an app, but there was no in between.

Google is further improving its permissions model with Android Q to make it more privacy-friendly.

Sharing your Wi-Fi network password with friends or asking for theirs can be awkward. Read on to find out more.

Android 10 beta rolls out

The new version of Android, Android Q, has arrived! However, it does also lock out legitimate apps that use clipboard data for other purposes, like passing them to a PC for seamless copying and pasting between devices. So for example, you can only add app shortcuts to the desktop and nothing else. By accessing the panel, you can immediately toggle your Wi-Fi, mobile data and Airplane Mode settings without having to go into the full Settings menu. Users will be able to control an application's access to the Photos, Videos, or Audio collections via new permissions.

This feature could be really useful when you're listening to a track and want to extend a taste of it to your friend as well, so you can switch to the speakers using this feature. We have a dedicated article on how to enable dark mode in Android Q that you can check out. "We're making Dynamic Depth an open format for the ecosystem, and we're working with our device-maker partners to make it available across devices running Android Q and later".

As noticed by Michael Young on Twitter, Android Q has a new option that allows users to force desktop mode.

It's potentially disappointing news for anyone hoping Google would offer an "affordable" flagship variant to rival the likes of the iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S10e - which offer a range of flagship features at a lower price point. Given the current smartphone design direction of more screen and less bezel, it's unlikely Google has dropped the idea completely.

With Android Q, you have a few seconds after an app has been removed to undo the change. Again, these features aren't now in the beta, but could well reappear again at a later date. The handsets supported are Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL along with the official Android emulator.

When you have a Pixel to hand, make sure it's not a phone you regularly use. You can also set a custom wallpaper for the desktop. Don't do this out of casual interest, especially since future betas figure to be more stable.
