Thousands of school students walked out of class across Australia and New Zealand on Friday as part of a global student strike against government inaction on climate change.

Since then, the protests have snowballed. "I want you to feel the fear I feel every day".

On March 15, students in Halifax and around the world will march to demand action on climate change.

On Friday, thousands of students are expected to demonstrate in more than 100 countries in what activists say could be a milestone moment in a grassroots campaign to push world leaders into doing more.

Some politicians have criticized the students, suggesting they should be spending their time in school, not on the streets.

In Germany, the leader of the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), Christian Lindner, went so far as to discourage the student's political engagement. "That's a matter for professionals".

Blenheim retirees Coral and Tony Thiel, who teach jazz to Marlborough Boys' College students twice a week, said the strike was "a wonderful thing". "One of those is compatible with life, the other isn't". But even after the elections were over, her protests continued.

She says she hopes to see sustained regional action by students to maintain pressure on the Government to seriously address the issue.

However, we do not feel that the now planned actions to address climate change are sufficient or are being implemented with the necessary urgency.

"It is truly inspiring to see young people, led by brilliant young women, making their voices heard and demanding urgent climate action".
