Sanders' campaign manager Faiz Shakir says the Vermont senator is honored to be the first presidential candidate with a unionized workforce.

Sanders, a progressive who is a staunch supporter of unions, said on Twitter he was "proud that our campaign is the first presidential campaign to unionize".

"We can not just support unions with words, we must back it up with actions", Sanders said.

Sanders is one of at least two dozen Democrats either running for the White House or eyeing a possible campaign to challenge President Trump in 2020. The union primarily represents food and retail service workers, however, it also represents employees of Solidarity Strategies, which is Chuck Rocha's consulting firm, reported The Huffington Post.

Sanders, who first vied for the Democratic nomination in 2016, has built his campaign platform on securing workers' rights, and fighting against economic inequality.
