The New Zealand national flag is flown at half-mast on a Parliament building in Wellington on March 15, 2019, after a shooting incident in Christchurch.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told Reuters the Indonesian Muslim community strongly condemned the shootings and that authorities were checking whether any of its citizens were victims.

The U.S. stands by New Zealand for anything we can do.

At about the same time, there was a second shooting at Masjid mosque in Linwood, where seven more were killed.

Ordinary people expressed horror over a live, point-of-view video posted online showing a gunman involved in the attack killing any person he came across in a mosque with his semi-automatic assault rifle.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired in central Christchurch at about 1.40pm local time (12.40am GMT), and urged people in the area to stay indoors.

Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay huddled on the floor, the video showed. After parking, he took two guns and walked a short distance to the mosque where he opened fire. After walking back outside and shooting a woman there, he gets back in his vehicle, where the song "Fire" by English rock band "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" can be heard blasting from the speakers. The video then cuts out.

A police presence has been placed at mosques around the country and ramped up throughout Christchurch.

"Who is he to decide who lives and dies?"

"When the flames of hatred are fanned, when people are demonized due to their faith, when people's fears are played on rather than addressed, the consequences are deadly as we have seen so sadly today", he said.

Six Indonesians had been inside one of the mosques, with three managing to escape and three unaccounted for, its foreign minister said.

One of the weapons used in the Christchurch massacres was reportedly engraved with the name of Luca Traini, an Italian far-right militant who was jailed for racist shootings a year ago.

Tarrant worked as a personal trainer at Big River Gym in the northern New South Wales city of Grafton, Australia, according to Australia's ABC news.

Afghanistan's Taliban movement - Islamic militants who carry out near-daily attacks on Afghan security forces - also condemned the shooting rampage, calling it an "unforgivable crime".

"I honestly can't believe that somebody I have probably had daily dealings with and had shared conversations and interacted with would be capable of something to this extreme", Gray told the news outlet.

A gunman livestreamed the shootings on Facebook, after publishing a "manifesto" in which he denounced immigrants, calling them "invaders".
