Ordinary people expressed horror over a live, point-of-view video posted online showing a gunman involved in the attack killing any person he came across in a mosque with his semi-automatic assault rifle.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired in central Christchurch at about 1.40pm local time (12.40am GMT), and urged people in the area to stay indoors.

Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay huddled on the floor, the video showed. After parking, he took two guns and walked a short distance to the mosque where he opened fire. After walking back outside and shooting a woman there, he gets back in his vehicle, where the song "Fire" by English rock band "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" can be heard blasting from the speakers. The video then cuts out.

A police presence has been placed at mosques around the country and ramped up throughout Christchurch.

Tarrant worked as a personal trainer at Big River Gym in the northern New South Wales city of Grafton, Australia, according to Australia's ABC news.

Afghanistan's Taliban movement - Islamic militants who carry out near-daily attacks on Afghan security forces - also condemned the shooting rampage, calling it an "unforgivable crime".

"I honestly can't believe that somebody I have probably had daily dealings with and had shared conversations and interacted with would be capable of something to this extreme", Gray told the news outlet.

A gunman livestreamed the shootings on Facebook, after publishing a "manifesto" in which he denounced immigrants, calling them "invaders".
