England squad: Dual heritage changing worldwide landscape, says Gareth Southgate

  • Declan Rice

On Rice's inclusion, the England manager said: "His form warrants it".

Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, who has suffered a dip in form this season and played poorly in his side's defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday, retains Southgate's confidence.

"The fact Declan played three senior worldwide games for us makes it a tad more disappointing, but good luck to the lad, we hope he does really well".

And four months on from their last game, which saw England beat Croatia at Wembley to reach the UEFA Nations League semi-final, Southgate admits the situation is different for a lot of his players with their clubs and there has also been the emergence of other options. We've tracked him for quite a while.

Tottenham defender Dier spent much of his childhood in Portugal after his family emigrated when he was seven, and he took his first steps in senior football with Sporting Lisbon.

"That said, there were never any guarantees made to him".

"We always want to play in a way that excites people, we want a team that the public are proud to watch and we hope to play our part". But his form has been excellent.

"As I said last month, I had an extremely difficult decision to make regarding my global future, but I have made that decision and now I just want to focus on the future, continuing to work hard and play as well as I possibly can".

"We like his character, his leadership qualities and he can play as a holding midfielder or a defender".

In terms of goalkeepers, Jack Butland and Burnley's Tom Heaton get in ahead of the likes of Marcus Bettinelli, Angus Gunn and Alex McCarthy.

"We have had players eligible for us who have been with us at under-16s and other countries have given them senior caps very early", Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live. Discussing Ward-Prowse's absence, Southgate added: "We love Prowsey - this recent spell is his best since we capped him".

And he responded to Rice's critics, pointing to the fact that some of them "did not play for the country of their birth", a likely reference to Kilbane.

The Three Lions face Czech Republic and Montenegro later this month as they look to build on promising performances at the World Cup and in the Nations League.

"We're pleased with what Jordan's done and we've got to help him through what was hopefully a blip at the weekend".
