The reputed boss of New York's Gambino crime family who was shot to death in front of his home tried to hide under his own SUV during the shooting, according to new reports.

NY media say it is the first killing of a family boss in the city since the Gambino family's Paul Castellano was shot dead outside a restaurant in 1985 on the orders of John Gotti.

Frank Cali, 53, was shot multiple times and then run over by a pickup truck, according to the New York Daily News.

Medics arrived at the scene and transported Cali to Staten Island University North, where he was pronounced dead. Police are now investigating the matter and have yet to arrest anyone in connection. He served a 16-month sentence.

Charges against members of Mafia operations, including Gambino family operatives, have included murder, loan sharking, gambling and illegal drug distribution, Reuters has reported. Gotti's brother Gene Gotti spent 29 years in prison for heroin distribution, but he got out in September 2018, leading to speculation as to what that could mean for the future of the organization.

One of the most notorious gangs of NY is at the center of a new mob murder mystery.

According to local media in NY, he took the helm of the Gambino family in 2015, replacing Domenico Cefalu.

Cali reportedly became the Gambino godfather in 2015 and is said to have brought a new crop of Italians to NY straight from Sicily.

Federal prosecutors had referred to Cali in court filings in recent years as the underboss of the Gambino organization.

The Genovese, Gambino, Lucchese, Colombo and Bonanno mafia families are believed to have controlled organised crime in NY for decades.

Affluent Todt Hill is renowned for its crime connections.

Aggressive federal prosecutions in the past 25 years decimated the ranks of New York's five Mafia families.

Also on Wednesday night, a Gambino family associate of over a decade, Anthony Pandrella, was arrested for robbing and murdering his friend Vincent Zito, 78, the US Attorney's Office in Brooklyn announced Thursday.
