If Mrs May succeeds in getting her deal over the line next week, she will go to Brussels next Thursday to request a short delay to a date no later than June 30, to give herself time to pass legislative changes necessarily for a smooth and orderly Brexit.

To succeed, she must win over dozens of Brexit-supporting rebels in her own Conservative Party and the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which has 10 lawmakers in parliament.

"We are determined today is the beginning of the fightback of the people who are not going to be restrained by politicians in Westminster".

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "She has been working tirelessly to make a deal and she will continue to do that".

She added: "We will march on and we will get to Westminster and we will show politicians in both parties that we will get Brexit". "There has been progress made", he told reporters.

The focus has moved to how long Brexit could be pushed back for if the deal falls.

As the Attorney General, with commendable courage confirmed, the risk of the United Kingdom being trapped in the backstop against our will remains, though it has been reduced. He would be in phone contact with the government over the weekend and return to London for more talks on Monday.

Ms Mordaunt said: "I voted against delaying Brexit, but the Parliament agreed to an extension".

What happens now? May will seek another parliamentary vote next week.

May has said she will hold another vote next week on her deal, although lawmakers have already rejected it twice. Everything she had done since she entered office was meant to deliver that.

The European Parliament's Brexit coordinator, Guy Verhofstadt, questioned why the E.U. should grant an extension if the British government is "not ready for a cross-party approach to break the current deadlock?"

Quitting the European Union after 46 years on 29 March remains the legal default unless European Union leaders unanimously grant Britain an extension.

The government narrowly averted an attempt by lawmakers to seize the agenda on March 20 with the aim of forcing a discussion of alternative Brexit options - possibly limiting May's options when she takes her case for delay to the EU.

However, the difficulties of negotiating the divorce deal without opening up negotiations on future trading terms have led to problems over European Union insistence on a "backstop" insurance policy for the border that has caused British lawmakers to refuse to ratify the deal. However Brexit comes about, opponents of the divorce worry that it will divide the West as it grapples with the US presidency of Donald Trump and growing assertiveness from Russian Federation and China.
