Almost 3,100 flights have been canceled over two days as a "bomb cyclone" makes its way across parts of the country, unleashing blizzard conditions and hurricane-force winds.

The storm left quickly rising floods in its wake in parts of eastern Nebraska and Iowa that saw residents evacuated from their homes, roads washed out in communities, and farmers anxious all the water would drown livestock.

"Travel will remain hard and life threatening across these areas, with improving conditions Thursday night into Friday as the storm pushes farther off to the northeast", the NWS says.

The National Weather Service also predicted river flooding from rain and snowmelt in parts of Iowa, which could last into the weekend.

Firefighters braved blizzard conditions on emergency call-outs in Parker, Colorado, after a "bomb cyclone" swept through the State on March 13. He police said people should be careful during the exit.

Flooding remained a concern in the lower Missouri River region - which is a major source for the Mississippi River - with the weather service issuing warnings of high water along the river and its tributaries from southeastern South Dakota to St. Louis in Missouri.

When a storm drops barometric pressure of at least 24 millibars, units of atmospheric pressure, within 24 hours or less, it bombs out or turns into a bomb cyclone.

Such severe conditions have led to the closing of school districts in areas of Colorado, with power being unavailable to over 175,000 people. "By mid-morning the heart of the storm will be western Iowa, headed toward Wisconsin and MI, where it will bring about a half-inch of warm rain", Hurley said. The state was preparing an emergency declaration, Noem said. The storm - previously dubbed a "bomb cyclone" for its quick, late season punch - was still expected to prompt warnings of blizzards and snow before noon in north central Kansas and Nebraska, Hurley said.

Colorado has been one of the hardest hit states, with white-out conditions and wind gusts reaching 97 miles per hour - Category 2 hurricane levels. In affected areas, many agencies are shutting down - and urging people to stay off the roads.

The storm was expected to drop up to 22 inches (56 centimeters) of snow in Wyoming, 14 inches (36 centimeters) in South Dakota and a foot (31 centimeters) in Colorado.

Some 250 vehicles were stranded out on the road in central Colorado, with drivers having to wait for hours in freezing temperatures before being rescued, according to Jacqueline Kirby, spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

The department had reports of 1,100 stranded cars early Thursday, she said, and emergency crews were conducting searches amid snowdrifts as high as their SUVs, she said.

"We do know that here is a link between the warming Arctic and the weather patterns in the mid-latitudes", she said. We have diabetic individuals. "We have a pregnant woman", she said earlier Thursday. A large pileup was reported on I-25 southbound near the Palmer Divide south of Denver on Wednesday, involving more than 40 vehicles. Emergency responders came from both Colorado and Wyoming.
