  • Parts of Midwest face heavy flooding after 'bomb cyclone'

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a statement today (Friday) saying: "Widespread and extremely risky flooding will continue today and tonight".

The NWS reckons there is a 10 percent chance that the river crests at least 38 feet, above the highest ever recorded by the Army Corps of Engineers in July of 1993.

The National Weather Service expects the Missouri River to reach 30.1 feet in St. Joseph early next week and hold at near record levels until the middle of next week, when it is expected to begin to slowly recede.

Meanwhiel, Ericson Dam in north-central Nebraska appeared to be holding despite flooding at Cedar River.

Officials are confident that the flooding around the plant presents no danger to the public, power district spokesman Mark Becker said.

The two cities have implemented several measures such as home buyouts and levees since then. They could be tested this year.

By the time skies cleared on March 15 after the Bomb Cyclone was long gone, most snow in Iowa and eastern Nebraska had melted due to warmer temperatures and rain from the storm. At 4:45 a.m. Thursday, the stage was 20.2 feet, or 0.2 feet above flood stage. The state's emergency operations center has already been activated.

Pietrycha says the heavy rain which has aggravated flooding conditions in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas has ended.

More than 140,000 farm acres are anticipated to be affected by the flooding. The weather service recorded a 60 miles per hour (97 kph) wind gust at Indianapolis International Airport.

Major to moderate flooding has been reported across Nebraska. The story is much the same throughout the central US, where flooding swamped small towns, forced residents to evacuate, and threatened to temporarily close a nuclear power plant in Nebraska.

"Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads".
