None of the four people arrested were on New Zealand's security and terrorism watchlist.

Two other armed suspects were taken into custody while police tried to determine what role, if any, they played in the cold-blooded attack that stunned New Zealand, a country so peaceful that police officers rarely carry guns.

Before Friday's attack, New Zealand's deadliest shooting in modern history took place in 1990 in the small town of Aramoana, where a gunman killed 13 people following a dispute with a neighbor.

Video and documents circulating online - but not officially confirmed - suggested the shooter had streamed his attack on Facebook Live.

Brenton Tarrant posted a 73-page manifesto on twitter before he started to kill people, he described them as a terrorist attack.

An anonymous post on Friday on the discussion site 8chan, known for a wide range of content including hate speech, said the writer was going to "carry out an attack against the invaders", and included links to a Facebook live stream, in which the Friday shooting appeared, and a manifesto.

Satellite navigational audio could also be heard in the video as the gunman drove to the mosque, which AFP tracked on Google StreetView showing his route for the two kilometres (1.2 miles) leading there.

"This is one of New Zealand's darkest days", Adern said.

One eye witness said that the gunman entered from the main entrance of the building and began shooting.

Four suspects are in custody after the shootings

Forty-nine people are dead and dozens are wounded after shootings at two mosques in New Zealand.

The gunman at one mosque was an Australian-born citizen, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in Sydney, describing him as "an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist".

New Zealand is also generally considered to be welcoming to migrants and refugees.

He describes himself as "a private and mostly introverted person" and admits he is racist, adding that he is an "Eco-fascist by nature".

"I saw dead people everywhere".

Bush clarified that police had found two improvised explosive devices in one auto. The man burst into the mosque as worshippers were kneeling for prayers. After walking back outside and shooting a woman there, he gets back in his auto, where the song "Fire" by English rock band "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" can be heard blasting from the speakers.

Home to almost 400,000 people, Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island. The singer bellows, "I am the god of hellfire!" and the gunman drives away.

The massacres took place from 1.40pm this afternoon at the Masjid Al Noor and Linwood Masjid mosques. "It must have been an automatic - no one could pull a trigger that quick", the man, who did not wish to be named, told AFP. In a statement he said: "Our hearts go out to the people of New Zealand following the news of this bad act in Christchurch". The CACR found that Muslims immigrants are viewed "less favourably" by New Zealanders. He said he was not a member of any organization, but had donated to and interacted with many nationalist groups, though he acted alone and no group ordered the attack.
