  • Rockets fired from Gaza target Tel Aviv for first time since 2014

Following the start of the Israeli air strikes, incoming rocket sirens blared in Israeli communities along Gaza.

Israeli military aircraft bombed Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip early on Friday, hours after two rockets were launched at Tel Aviv in the first such attack since a 2014 war.

Following the overnight exchanges, sirens sounded again in Israeli border towns after dawn broke.

Gaza residents reported a number of rockets being fired back at Israel in response.

Others pointed the finger at Islamic Jihad, the second largest militant organization in Gaza, saying the group may have been trying to disrupt efforts by Egypt to broker a truce between Hamas and Israel.

The IDF has prepared a plan for a war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip that will "go all the".

No group immediately claimed responsibility.

"I regret the folks in the Gaza Strip, probably Hamas, but I suspect we shouldn't speculate, fired the rockets and put Israelis at risk", Pompeo told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" co-anchor Brian Kilmeade.

More than 40 locations were targeted with about 100 strikes, the source said.

That salvo caused no casualties or damage, missing built-up areas. Netanyahu is locked in a tight fight for re-election and could face heavy criticism from his opponents if he is seen as ineffective against the terror threat.

Two Palestinians were reported wounded in Gaza, while no Israelis were known to have been injured. There have been several smaller rounds of fighting since, reined in by Egyptian and United Nations mediation.

After a brief respite, 10 Palestinians are killed in clashes with the Israeli army during demonstrations on September 28 and October 5.

There have been no reports of fatalities, and it remains unclear who carried out the launches. Among the terrorist targets was the offices of the Hamas headquarters in Gaza City responsible for directing terrorist operatives in Judea and Samaria, building terrorist infrastructures and transferring money to those responsible for terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens.

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon appealed the Security Council to denounce Hamas following the rocket attack on Tel Aviv.

Further rounds of rockets were launched into Israel following the reprisal attacks.

Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees, two smaller Gaza armed factions, also denied responsibility.

Also Friday, a Hamas official said an agreement to restore calm has been reached. He added the United States would continue to "ensure robust, bipartisan support for Israel's defence".

Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis, the chief Israeli military spokesman, said the army had been caught off guard by Thursday night's rocket barrage and had no advance intelligence. "This method will never work".

Yaakov Amidror, a retired major general and former national security adviser, said he believed Netanyahu was "experienced and sober enough" that electoral pressure would not be a factor in determining his response.
