The World Kidney Day, which is commemorated on the second Thursday of March, seeks to highlight the kidney problems related to common health disorders like diabetes and high blood pressure, which may lead to the chronic kidney diseases. The #850Strong walk will be at Leslie Porter Park at 10 a.m. Approximately 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure may have chronic kidney disease, again making it necessary for all hypertensive persons to be screened for kidney disease.

Amira urged government to strengthen primary health care (PHC) and make it available to the grassroots. She pleaded: "We are begging government on behalf of the patients and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to please consider kidney diseases".

Another risk factor for kidney disease is prolonged use of drugs that damage the kidneys, like Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), certain antibiotics, even some drugs used to treat hypertension.

The Principal of the Post Basic School of Nursing, Mrs Titi Segun-Agboola, explained that the body uses kidney organ to cleanse the blood while likening it to the "environmental sanitation of the organ of the body".

He said that many problems of the kidney are diagnosed through the urine, warning that excessive urine is a sign of trouble and that when the filters in the kidneys are damaged, protein leaks into the urine. This can make it hard to get a good night's sleep at night.

Kidney disease can be detected by the doctor after performing certain tests to check the functionality of the organ. Proper control of calcium, phosphorus, intact parathyroid hormone and 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels in patients with CKD is very crucial to prevent and delay the progression of CKD.

As kidney disease usually does not go away with medications or time and has the tendency of worsening over time, it is better to take small steps at the right time. "We know that through education and through early detection we can have an impact".
