  • Jet Airways suspends operations on 13 worldwide routes

Jet Airways, on the verge of going belly-up, has suspended operations on as many as 13 more worldwide routes till end-April even as it grounded seven more planes due to non-payment of rentals, taking the number of such aircraft to 54. Besides, Jet Airways has also reduced frequencies on seven other overseas routes, mostly from Delhi and Mumbai, as per sources.

The airline has lost ground in terms of market shares, even as its pilots and crew are said to be approaching other airlines for employment.

Flights which have been suspended from Mumbai include services to Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dammam, and Hong Kong.

The carrier is said to have delayed payments to banks, suppliers, and aircraft lessors.

Due to lack of funds and no relief package (bailout), the airline controlled by Naresh Goyal has reduced its 600 daily flight operations by one-fourth.

IndiGo is hiring more than 100 Boeing 737 commander level pilots, primarily those exiting Jet Airways, as the country's biggest airline looks to overcome a flying-crew shortage and establish its dominance amid an exodus of personnel from the financially-stressed airline.

Similarly, flights on the Mumbai-Hong Kong (7 weekly) route will be halted till April 30, while the Kolkata-Dhaka services have also been halted till April 30.

The airline has also suspended services on the Bangalore-Singapore route, where it flies twice daily, till end of April.

The airline has made service reductions to certain worldwide routes like Bangkok, Kathmandu, Singapore and some Middle East destinations like Doha and Kuwait.

On Friday, pilots of Jet Airways urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu to instruct the management to release their pending salaries.

Jet, which employs more than 20,000 people, has also been facing pressure from pilots who have not been paid on time, with unions threatening they will walk off the job if salaries do not arrive soon.

"The airline's management says that the company is facing financial crisis and is not able to pay salaries to their pilots and engineers as they draw big packages every month", Valiani said and added that the rest 18,000 low-paid employees were getting their regular salaries. However, it is not clear how many planes the airlines would be taking on lease.
