  • Drug-resistant fungus is spreading scientists warn of new superbugs to come

"Symptoms of C. auris infection depend on the part of the body affected", the CDC explained.

Candida auris, a yeast infection with a 1/3 mortality rate if the infection reaches either the blood, heart or brain, was first discovered in Japan in 2009 and presents a "serious global health threat", the CDC said. While most strains of the fungus appear to be resistant to at least one antifungal drug, most C. auris infections do respond to treatment with a class of antifungal medications known as echinocandins. As of March 29, at least 617 cases of clinical C. auris have been reported in the U.S. with more than 1,000 patients found to be carrying the fungus.

Candida auris first popped up on the CDC's worldwide radar in 2016, and it wasn't long before the first cases of infection were reported in the U.S. According to the CDC's latest figures, the number of confirmed cases in the U.S. has risen to 617, with the majority of them clustered in New York City, New Jersey and Chicago.

As of February, 587 cases of C. auris had been confirmed in 12 states nationwide.

Unfortunately the answer is yes - it's estimated that between 30 and 60% of people who had it have died. So what exactly is Candida auris?

New tech to help clamp down on driver mobile phone use
The Thames Valley and Hampshire forces are rolling out the technology to show when motorists are using their phones. It works by detecting if there is an active 2G, 3G or 4G signal in operation.

Infection of the disease is usually diagnosed by blood cultures, but it is harder to identify as it can be confused with other types of yeasts and requires special laboratory tests.

Question: Can anyone get this fungus and how is it spread? It's also been found in urine and respiratory samples. Also, Candida Auris can easily be detected on the walls or furniture of your residence, office or any other area.

IDPH and local health departments are working with health care facilities to implement and maintain infection control practices to reduce transmission (cleaning and disinfecting environmental surfaces and shared equipment, hand hygiene, gloves, gowns, etc.).

"Infections have been found in patients of all ages, from preterm infants to the elderly", the CDC said.

In an interview with The New York Times, fungal branch head Tom Chiller referred to C. auris as the "creature from the black lagoon" because nobody knows where it came from and it continues to spread globally. Those people who are in hospitals or are suffering from any kind of illness already have more chances of experiencing this infection. Those who are at the highest risk include folks with a weakened immune system, anyone living in nursing homes, or have feeding tubes, breathing tubes and catheters entering their body.
