Fisher-Price recalls millions of sleepers after more than 30 babies die

14 April, 2019, 23:42 | Author: Regina Silva

"Since the 2009 product introduction, over 30 infant fatalities have occurred in Rock 'n Play Sleepers, after the infants rolled over while unrestrained, or under other circumstances".

Kids In Danger - an organization working to protect kids through product safety regulation - released a warning against inclined sleepers in June 2018.

It said it was not aware of any problems with the cradles in New Zealand but would issue a public warning to parents and caregivers if necessary.

Toymaker Fisher-Price chose to recall almost five million of its Rock 'n Play Sleepers after it was linked to the death of 32 infants.

However, Fisher-Price stated on its website before the recall that it continued to stand by the safety of the sleeper because it met various safety standards. The recall affects all models of the product. But it's a hard metric to regulate as every baby will develop at a different speed - some rolling over at five months, and some before three months.

Consumers should immediately stop using the product and contact Fisher-Price for a refund or voucher, CPSC said.

Later today they will also be the first ever K-pop band to perform on popular United States show Saturday Night Live . To build on that momentum, NBC shared a new promotional video featuring BTS , Stone and cast member Cecily Strong.

It also outlined safety measures that parents should keep in mind for all products, while imploring that the use of the sleeper be stopped "when infants begin to roll over".

The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) had earlier called for the product's recall, labelling it as "deadly".

AAP President, Kyle Yasuda said, "When parents purchase a product for their baby or child, many assume that if it's being sold in a store, it must be safe to use".

"We don't recommend that babies are placed to sleep with their heads elevated because that is a position that would be subject to accidental suffocation [and] strangulation in bed", said Lori Feldman-Winter of the AAP task force on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
