Powerful, deadly storms sweep across the South

Rain and storms increase late this afternoon and evening as a dynamic system pushes across the South. Storms will be capable of producing damaging wind, large hail, tornadoes and flash flooding. Multiple people were injured and several homes were damaged in Hamilton, Mississippi, said Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley. No fatalities were reported. A mobile home community was damaged, but no injuries are being reported.

The same system caused damage in Columbus, Mississippi.

Clay said 19 people were taken to hospitals for treatment, including two in critical condition.

The Angelina County Sheriff's Office said an 8-year-old and a 3-year-old died when strong winds toppled a tree onto the back of their family's vehicle in Lufkin while it was in motion.

Power poles and trees were knocked over and parts of buildings were left hanging across utility lines in Troy, located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Montgomery. The children, ages 8 and 3, were dead at the scene, although both parents, who were in the front seat, escaped injury, he said.
