A GoFundMe campaign had raised $320,000 by early Sunday for the 5-year-old boy who suffered life-threatening injuries when a deranged stranger flung him off a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn.

On Friday, 24-year old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda allegedly threw the child, who has not been identified, from the third floor of the mall, police said.

The child and suspect did not know each other and investigators are "actively trying to figure out why this occurred", Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts told reporters, according to the Pioneer Press.

One eye witness told local media that "he heard a woman scream that her child had been thrown from the balcony".

"She was screaming, 'Everyone pray, everyone pray. Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge, '" a witness, Brian Johnson told WCCO-TV.

Shortly after the incident, police arrested a 24-year-old man inside the mall, one of the state's leading tourist attractions, after he had fled the scene, Potts said. Potts said police managed to apprehend the suspect inside the mall.

Authorities believe there's no relationship between the suspect and the child or his family. "His soul is soft and gentle and instantly brings a smile to everybody he meets", the family friend described Landen on the GoFundMe page.

On Saturday, Potts declined to give specifics about Aranda's mental health but said some of the previous cases had been handled in mental health courts. Children's Hospital Minneapolis had no information to release.

"We think this is a very isolated event", Potts said.

'This was a senseless act and words can not truly express our profound shock and sadness, ' the Mall of America said in a statement on Friday.

'Our immediate and only concern is for the wellbeing of the family and the child, as well as for any individuals who may have witnessed the incident.

He was also convicted of fifth-degree assault, trespassing and interfering with a police officer for an incident in October of 2015.

According to court records, the suspect has been previously barred from the Mall of America.

In a separate incident three months later, Aranda reportedly threw ice water and tea at a woman in a mall restaurant when she declined to buy him food, CNN reported. Police learned at that time he had an existing trespass notice prohibiting him from the Mall until July of 2016.
