A top European Union figure has said he fears Britain will waste its latest Brexit reprieve and "run down the clock" once again.

BBC Brussels correspondent Adam Fleming said this was a "clear swipe" at French President Emmanuel Macron and others who had warned the United Kingdom could disrupt the functioning of the European Union during a long extension.

But Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt said the six-month extension was too short for change and too far away to prompt action.

"We must continue to deal with Brexit with an open mind and in a civilised manner", he said.

Giving an account of last week's summit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, European Council President Tusk said he was responding to a statement by one national leader who had warned "dreamers" not to think "Brexit could be reversed".

"No, it can not. Therefore, I also ask you to reject similar ideas, if they were to be voiced in this House".

'The only thing that can save this is Nigel Farage'Donald Tusk watched on as Mr Verhofstadt criticised his approach to Brexit.

"They will be full members of the Parliament with all the rights and obligations".

The British government will resume talks with the main opposition Labour party this week on how to resolve the deadlock over Brexit, a senior minister, David Lidington, said on Sunday.

Other EU leaders in the room remembered that fact and reminded Tusk that it is not their decision to make.

European Council President Donald Tusk admitted on Tuesday that not only is he opposed to the UK's decision to leave the EU, but it's his goal to "reverse Brexit".

But today in front of you I would like to say at this rather hard moment in our history, that we need the dreamers and dreams.

"There has to be access to European markets and above all there has to be a dynamic relationship to protect the conditions and rights that we've got for environment and consumer workplace rights", Corbyn said according to the Guardian.

"My message is that, whatever the outcome of Brexit, Britain is going to be the best place in Europe to invest in with our top universities, the best universities in Europe, with more tech start-ups than France, Germany, and Italy combined".

Cross-party talks between the government and the Labour Party are set to resume this week to find a way through the impasse.
