University bosses are now investigating to find out how the group gained access to the tower.

School spokesman Bob Howe told the New York Post the tower was "always locked" and that the organisation was looking into whether the lock had been tampered with.

After climbing the narrow staircase inside the tower, Monfries uploaded a video of the view to Snapchat, captioning it: 'Bell Tower, ' according to The New York Times.

Sydney Monfries, a senior studying journalism and a native of Portland, suffered head and neck injuries and later died after being taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in the NY borough of the Bronx.

"They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning", the student claimed.

Christopher Rodgers, dean of students at Rose Hill, told The Ram in 2013 that since "the clock tower is rather unsafe, and therefore secured area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it". The decision by Monfries and friends to fulfill this rite is what ultimately led to Monfries's tragic death only weeks before her anticipated graduation in May 2019, making the ascent up the bell tower a rite of passage only for those who are lucky enough to survive. "I think a large part of the reason people want to do this so badly is that the school doesn't allow it", said Patrick Burke, Fordham College at Rose Hill '14. The "New York Post" quotes, however, several students, after which the door was not always locked. The waiter also confided that his roommate was among the friends that accompanied Monfries into the bell tower.

Her uncle Gregory Monfries, said: "This is not a good time".

The tower is off limits to students, according to the university.

'She couldn't breath. She hit her head, ' he said.

Monfries was from Portland, Oregon, and was studying journalism at the university.

Fordham University confirmed the incident and sent a letter to students.

University president Joseph M McShane told NBC New York Ms Monfries would be awarded her degree posthumously. "Our hearts go out to Sydney's parents, and her family and friends-theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".
