Ajax produced a stunning turnaround to reach their first UEFA Champions League semi-final since 1996/97.

In an age of ever-increasing European dominance by the heavyweight clubs in Europe's five major leagues, Ajax - who were 250-1 outsiders at the start of the competition - are striking a blow for the forgotten nations by defying some of the favourites.

Having already seen off Real Madrid in the previous round, Ajax showed no fear against Ronaldo and the Italian giant either, advancing 3-2 on aggregate.

Juventus signed five-times World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo this season in their bid to add the Champions League to their domestic dominance.

And the Dutch visitors held on, with Ronaldo unable to make a difference after his incredible hat-trick had pulled Juventus into the quarter-finals in the last-16 win over Atletico Madrid. The midfielder finished impeccably to level at 2-2 on aggregate, leaving the tie poised on a knife-edge as the two teams went back to the dressing room for half-time.

Ajax won 2-1 at Juventus on today to reach the semifinals for the first time since 1997 and end Ronaldo's hopes of a fourth straight title.

United could be in for a central defender this summer and the club's former centre-half Rio Ferdinand hailed De Ligt as "the best young centre half on the planet".

Cristiano Ronaldo opened proceedings with a thumping header in the 28th minute - his 65th in Champions League knockout rounds - but the Old Lady's lead lasted just six minutes as Donny van de Beek broke the offside trap before calmly slotting into the Juve goal.

Barcelona will meet either Liverpool or Porto in the semi-finals.

"It's a great achievement for them to be in this stage", Kanu said.

"He's disappointed as we all are, but we can't be dragged down by this disappointment", Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said.

The second half was one dominated by Ajax, with their 19-year-old captain Matthijs de Ligt leaping highest from a corner to score in the 67th minute.

Now for Ajax! One forced change with Noussair Mazraoui coming in for Nicolas Tagliafico who is suspended!

"I thought we should've won 4-1".

And, after drawing Juventus, many expected them to bow out in the quarter-finals.
