  • Microsoft is also working on AirPods competitor, code-named 'Morrison'

Microsoft is reportedly working on a new product that would expand its lineup of headphones to a second category.

"According to multiple sources who are familiar with the company's plans, Microsoft is now working on a pair of earbuds under the code name of Morrison", wrote Sams.

The tech giant is reportedly developing "Surface Buds" in an effort to take on Apple's wildly successful AirPods, Thurrott reported, citing sources close to the situation.

The earphones would potentially be branded as Surface Buds, following the Surface headphones (shown above) that released a year ago.

When it comes to features, it's not yet clear how Microsoft wants its earbuds to differentiate from the other similar products on the market.

However, as Fast Company pointed out, Microsoft no longer considers Cortana to be a rival to Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri or Google's Assistant, so this wouldn't give the firm that much of a competitive advantage. "Spin the noise cancellation dial on Microsoft's new cans, and the world fades away", we wrote at the time.

Microsoft's foray into headphones may not be a one-off, according to a new report. However, they could officially debut simply as the Surface Buds. The earbuds are said to come with Cortana integration and may include noise cancellation feature as well.

The company's reinvention under Satya Nadella has brought us many things, some good, some bad, but one of the words that keep coming back is "cuckold".

Specifics on this aren't available right now, but more details should make the headlines as we approach the release date and the work on the project advances.
