  • Man dies in deer attack in Victoria

A deer attacked and killed an Australian man and injured a woman on a farm north of Melbourne on Wednesday (April 17), Australian Broadcasting Corp online reported.

Citing Victoria Police, the ABC reports the deer attacked the couple around 8:20am as they walked on their Moyhu property, some 25 kilometres south of Wangaratta.

McDonald, a farmer who did odd jobs at other properties in the area, died from his injuries at the scene shortly after the attack.

The woman suffered life-threatening injuries after going to her husband's aid, local media said.

The deer has been euthanised.

"The man died at the scene", police said in a statement.

'It might be quite docile for most of the year but when mating season is on, you don't go near them'.

"It's a very, very short sharp season where they get aggressive and fight with each other", said David Voss from Australian Deer Association, a hunters' lobby group.

A recent study into all deaths caused by animals in Australia between 2000 and 2013 found none had involved deer.

The 45-year-old mother-of-two had concerns about keeping the deer at the enclosure.

"The majority of encounters most people will have with deer is with deer fleeing in the opposite direction."

Howlett said that deer can become a danger to humans in domesticated scenarios.

Victoria's deer population is primarily made up of four species: sambar, fallow, red and hog deer.

Parks Victoria classifies deer - which are not native to Australia - as a threat to vegetation in national parks.
