  • Production-ready Aston Martin Rapide E revealed

So it begins. This is Aston Martin's very first all-electric, full production vehicle, housed in the rather delightful form of the Rapide.

Aston Martin worked with Williams Advanced Engineering to create the model.

Twin electric motors driving the rear wheels draw their power from it and are rated at a combined 604 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque, which are both more than the gasoline-fueled version boasts.

Aston Martin will build just 155 units of the Rapid E, which will be the automaker's only battery-powered auto until the United Kingdom automaker revives its Lagonda brand as an all-electric marque early next decade.

The car-maker also claims that recharging can be completed in as little as three hours using the high-power on-board AC charger.

Power comes from a familiar 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 332 hp (248 kW / 337 PS) and 270 lb-ft (366 Nm) of torque. The vehicle has LED daytime running lamps and high-intensity discharge bi-functional xenon headlights with auto on/off.

The Rapide E's electric propulsion system is packaged within the space left by the removal of the original 6.0-litre V12 engine. The top speed of the Rapide E stands at 250 kmph. The Rapide E is compatible with 800v fast-charging systems, however, which can refill the packs at a rate as high as 310 miles of range per hour.

The Rapide E is rear-wheel drive, powered by twin motors and can theoretically do 155mph, although most models are likely to hit lifetime top speeds of around 4mph, when being shuttled gingerly from delivery van to the climate-controlled auto collection warehouse of someone who got lucky with an app once or used to race cars as a job. Together with revised spring and damper rates, the Rapide E is said to deliver the pure handling characteristics of the Rapide AMR. Since it doesn't need an exhaust the rear diffuser has grown, along with a redesigned underfloor to take advantage of it. The wheels and low-resistance Pirelli P-Zero are also tuned for maximum efficiency.

Aston puts the sum of the aerodynamic changes at an eight per cent improvement over the combustion-engined model.

Cabin highlights include a 10-inch digital screen that replaces the previous analogue displays and provides all the relevant detail on the EV powertrain's performance - battery state of charge, motor power levels, regenerative performance and real-time energy consumption - while carbon-fibre trim is used extensively throughout. Finally, the health and status of Rapide E can also be tracked from the app, providing reminders such as when a key service is due.

"Unveiling the Rapide E will be a huge moment for Aston Martin". Aston tells us there's 800V and 65kWh in total. "As our first all-electric production vehicle, it is a truly historic step. One that signals Aston Martin is prepared for the huge challenge of an environmentally responsible and sustainable future". "I believe Rapide E embodies that desire and paves the way for a hugely exciting future".
