Among other Pulitzer Prizes for journalism and the arts announced Monday, the Los Angeles Times won the Investigative Reporting award for a series of articles on a USC gynaecologist who was accused of sexual misconduct with young patients over more than a quarter-century.

Before Monday, only 41 special citation prizes had been awarded since 1930, and winners have ranged from individual people to organizations and groups, including the New York Times, writers E.B. White, Alex Haley and Kenneth Roberts, and Columbia University and its Graduate School of Journalism. The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, got a special citation for its coverage of a gun attack in the newsroom that claimed five staff members.

The man charged in the shooting had a longstanding grudge against the paper.

Winners in the field of news reporting included the Wall Street Journal for its investigations of hush money payments orchestrated by the president's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to silence women who claimed to have had affairs with the Donald Trump before he was the USA president.

The Pulitzer for history was awarded to David Blight for "Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom" while the biography prize went to Jeffrey Stewart for 'The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke'.

In general non-fiction, the prize went to Eliza Griswold for 'Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America'.

She becomes the 12th musician, and first female performer, to be given the citation - joining the likes of Bob Dylan, Scott Joplin and John Coltrane.
