The Red Sox carried three catchers for the entire 2018 season but decided they would keep just two for this season.

Don't worry, everyone from their MLB-worst rotation (7.18 ERA) is safe.

The Red Sox have made what many will view as a drastic move, designating Blake Swihart for assignment and calling up Sandy Leon from Pawtucket after a 6-11 start to the season. The potential at the plate has always been there, but his defensive deficiencies made him hard to play regularly.

Swihart, 27, was hitting.231/.310/.385 with one double, one homer, and four RBI in 29 plate appearances this season for the defending champs. It's considered unlikely he would pass through waivers and return to the Red Sox.

The Boston Red Sox have designated catcher Blake Swihart for assignment.

Leon hit.120 (3-for-25) in his seven games with the PawSox, but had no passed balls and caught three of the six runners that tried to swipe a bag on him in his 60 innings behind the plate.
