  • Bill Weld is challenging Trump for GOP nomination in 2020

Bill Weld, a former two-term Republican governor of deep-blue MA, officially entered the 2020 presidential race Monday, mounting the only GOP primary challenge against President Trump's reelection bid so far.

Mr Weld, who is one of Massachusetts's most successful governors, ran for vice president on the Libertarian Party ticket in 2016.

"America has a choice", says the narrator of a video announcing Weld's candidacy.

"In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their "win at all cost" battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering", Weld said in statement. "I am ready to lead that fight".

Weld's move makes Trump the first incumbent president since George H.W. Bush in 1992 to face a notable primary challenge. Johnson and Weld have spent the day campaigning in Salt Lake City, the home town of former republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Mr Weld has released a campaign video which showcases his political style against the current president's. "The country deserves to have some fiscal constraint and conservatism".

He endorsed Democrat Barack Obama over Republican nominee John McCain in 2008, though he later said that had been a mistake.

Weld said he will not run as an Independent if he does not win the Republican nomination.

Weld has not won a political race since being re-elected governor by a landslide in his heavily Democratic state in 1994.

While holding the line on spending and taxes, Weld as governor embraced liberal positions at odds with national Republicans on abortion and gay rights.

Weld fired back at Helms, suggesting it was un-American for Helms to refuse to hold a public hearing on a high-profile ambassadorial nomination.

The video says that Weld was the first Republican governor of MA in more than 20 years, calls him a "crime fighter" who as governor cut taxes, reformed the welfare program and balanced the state's budget, while making the state safer.
