The contract makes Wilson the NFL's highest-paid player, and it locks the Seahawks quarterback down until 2023.

At $35 million per year, Wilson's annual average salary passes the previous record set by Aaron Rodgers when he signed his massive extension - four years, $134 million with a $57.5 million signing bonus - to stay with the Green Bay Packers last summer.

Russell Wilson signed a huge deal with the Seattle Seahawks last night, despite reports that the two weren't anywhere close to a deal.

Wilson's annual average of $35 million per season eclipses Aaron Rodgers' extension signed past year. With the signing bonus at $65 million, the Seahawks don't have to guarantee anything in the final four years of the contract.

Wilson also took to social media after resigning with the team, sharing an intimate video of the couple, who will celebrate two years of marriage in July.

"Hey Seattle, we got a deal", Russell said from his bed. "Go Hawks! But, I'm gonna see y'all in the morning". The deal reportedly came after several days of negotiation. At $27 million a season for five years, it was quite the investment in a player who hadn't yet broken into an elite tier at his position.

Wilson, the team's starting quarterback since 2012, announced the news via Twitter early Tuesday morning.

"Russell's goal and his hope was that he would continue his career with the Seahawks and continue to bring championships to this town", Wilson's agent Mark Rodgers said. It makes Wilson the highest-paid player in National Football League history at $35 million per year, locking him up through 2023.

ESPN and the Seattle PI reported the terms of the deal.

No more speculation about Wilson wanting to play elsewhere. (Stafford, by comparison, ranks 22nd at 88.4.) Wilson won a Super Bowl ring back in 2014 and his team is 75-36-1 with him under center, so extending him at 30 years old merely keeps a good thing going. Defensive tackle Jarran Reed is likely to get paid as well. He has passed for 25,624 yards with 212 total touchdowns while completing 64.1 percent of his passes. He's also been extremely durable, never missing a game while playing through significant knee, ankle and shoulder injuries.
