A nationwide search is underway to find 18-year-old Sol Pais, who made "credible" - but not specific - threats after traveling from Miami to Denver on Monday night, said Dean Phillips, the special agent in charge of the Denver FBI office.

The teen from Florida was captured Wednesday near the Echo Lake Lodge at the base of Mount Evans in Clear Creek County, the station reports.

"She has had an infatuation with Columbine, with the perpetrators of Columbine, she has made comments to that effect, but she hasn't identified a specific threat to a specific school", Phillips said.

Authorities believed that Pais had flown from Miami to Denver on Tuesday with plans to carry out her own Columbine-style attack.

This is a developing story.

United States authorities have mounted a massive search for Sol Pais, 18, who travelled from Florida to Colorado where she bought a pump-action shotgun and ammunition and was last seen in the foothills around Denver.

Pais' parents last saw her on Sunday and reported her missing to Florida authorities on Monday night, police in Surfside, Florida, said.

"Last night, Sol Pais traveled to Colorado and made threats in the Denver metropolitan area", Jefferson County sheriff's officials wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.

The doors were locked at Columbine and more than 20 other schools in the Denver area as the sheriff's office said it was investigating threats against schools related to an FBI investigation. The sheriff's office said Pais was connected to the threat and was considered armed and unsafe. She was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot, Albers said.

Denver Public Schools said that all facilities and programs will be closed Wednesday, and there will be no afternoon activities or athletic competitions.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said federal, state and local law enforcement were "dedicating all of their resources to locate this unsafe individual".

"They provided valuable information that led us to Colorado and a lot of things that assisted in preventing maybe more loss of life", Yero said. Somebody who identified herself as "Sol Pais" ran an online blog replete with journal entries dripping with angst and drawings of guns.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said all troopers in Colorado are on the lookout for Pais. "The threats appear limited to schools in Colorado".

Jefferson County Public Schools, which includes Columbine High School in Littleton, were among nearly 20 school districts closed Wednesday as authorities searched for Pais.

"We know that Columbine continues to attract people from all around the world", he said.

After the 18-year-old arrived in Colorado on Monday, she purchased a pump-action shotgun and ammunition and went to the foothills, Phillips said.

On Tuesday, some schools released their students after additional security was called in and canceled evening activities or moved them inside. Police were instructed to detain her for a mental health evaluation.
