Amazon's Echo devices can now keep an eye, or rather an ear, on your home while you're away. If you're the type of person who has a hard time enjoying a holiday away, mostly because you're anxious about what's going on at home, this new feature could help put your mind at ease.

In order to train Alexa for Guard functionality, Amazon apparently employed licensed contractors who then proceeded to break lots of glass so Alexa could have a library of sounds to match breaking glass against. Users can get automatic alerts when the device detects the sound of a smoke alarm, a carbon monoxide alarm, or glass breaking after you've told it that you're out of town.

Alexa Guard can also switch your smart lights on and off, mimicking your normal usage to make it seem like you're at home.

Then, the next time you exit the house, simply say, "Alexa, I'm leaving", to set Guard to Away mode.

His fortune has been estimated at £950m - the first time in 17 years that Sir Philip has not been listed as a billionaire. British citizens Sri, 83, and Gopi, 79, who are based in London , are two of the four brothers controlling the empire.

If an Echo device detects an acoustic pattern matching the selected sound, it automatically sends the homeowner a Smart Alert with a 10-second audio clip of the event. That page also has instructions on how to set up Alexa Guard if you've already got Echo devices dotting the rooms in your house, so it's a pretty good resource for those looking to get the ball rolling on the basic monitoring Alexa now offers.

Alexa Guard probably can't serve as a total replacement for home security systems, as it's somewhat limited in what it can monitor. Using machine learning, it was able to teach Alexa how to listen and recognise these types of sounds so that it can better understand when to alert you of a potential break-in or hazard.

Alexa Guard was originally available on newer-generation Echo smart speakers. Customers can use their voices to arm and disarm their Ring, ADT Pulse, and ADT Control security systems.
