  • It's the first example of impressionist art to cross the 100 million dollar threshold at auction

One of the few paintings in Claude Monet's celebrated "Haystacks" series that still remains in private hands sold at auction on Tuesday for $110.7 million, setting a record for an Impressionist work.

Monet completed the oil painting in 1890 as part of his Meules (Haystacks) series, depicting rural life near his home in the Normandy region.

Monet's celebrated "Meules", which was sold in Manhattan, last hit the auction block in 1986.

Monet's Haystacks series had 25 paintings, the majority of which hang in art galleries around the world.

The Jeremy Kyle Show dressed guests in hoodies and tracksuits, report claims
Ms Langcaster-James said she turned down an offer to work on the show as she was uncomfortable with its approach. She said this can cause guests distress and wants to see an end to the show and others that rely on humiliation.

The anonymous art collector who bought the piece in 1986 paid just $2.5 million for the work. Sotheby's did not provide any details on the new buyer, but did tweet that there was a bit of a bidding war before the final price was achieved.

Nymphéas en fleur was previously the most expensive Monet painting, selling for $84.7m in May 2018.

Zao Wou-Ki's abstract painting "Juin-Octobre 1985" has become the most expensive painting to ever sell at auction in Hong Kong. The auction house says it's a world auction record for the artist and the first work of Impressionist art to cross the US$100 million threshold at auction.
