In Tuesday's statement, the 23-time Grand Slam victor insisted she would still be competing in the French Open later in May.

There are further concerns surrounding the physical state of Serena Williams ahead of the French Open after withdrawing from the Italian Open because of a continuing knee injury.

The American, 37, was set to play sister Venus Williams in the second round but said she would be "concentrating on rehab" now. "I will miss the fans and competition at one of my favorite tournaments".

The French Open starts on 26 May.

Four-time Rome victor Serena, 37, had eased through 6-4, 6-2 her first-round match against Swedish qualifier Petersen.

Serena - now ranked 11th - has completed just eight matches this year, also withdrawing from Indian Wells in March with illness.

Serena Williams is having trouble finishing a tournament.

The four-time Rome champion Serena Williams has won the first match on clay outside Roland Garros since Rome 2016, ousting Rebecca Peterson 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 15 minutes on Tuesday to kick off title chase. Her last match came against Peterson and she managed to beat the Swede again today, firing ten aces and dropping 13 points in nine service games.
