  • Serena Williams withdraws from Rome with ongoing left knee injury

In Tuesday's statement, the 23-time Grand Slam victor insisted she would still be competing in the French Open later in May.

There are further concerns surrounding the physical state of Serena Williams ahead of the French Open after withdrawing from the Italian Open because of a continuing knee injury.

The American, 37, was set to play sister Venus Williams in the second round but said she would be "concentrating on rehab" now. "I will miss the fans and competition at one of my favorite tournaments".

The French Open starts on 26 May.

Four-time Rome victor Serena, 37, had eased through 6-4, 6-2 her first-round match against Swedish qualifier Petersen.
