Viewers are calling for Love Island to be axed after the Jeremy Kyle Show was cancelled "indefinitely" following the death of a guest.

Professor Sir Simon Wessely, former president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said the show should be dropped and Jeremy Kyle's "help" stretches the meaning of the word to the limit.

Mr Collins said that the DCMS select committee will discuss "what should be done to review the duty of care support for people appearing in reality TV shows" in its private meeting on Wednesday.

"It's hard, with so many shows on television, to know how you could stop any risk really of any side effects of a negative way of people who would appear on television". It's the theatre of cruelty.

"People are being used as a form of entertainment".

"Of course, the show will not be the only factor implicated".

He added: "Looking back this was probably my version of self-harming, but at least I didn't feel the pain of social media and public ridicule".

Prof Wessely said that shame and guilt are powerful emotions that can precipitate a breakdown "so it's not hard to imagine that this is multiplied when the audience is a million".

Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright said: "This is a deeply concerning case".

Honey Langcaster-James has raised concerns about the show.

The Jeremy Kyle Show, known for its salacious stories and the host's confrontational interview style, has drawn harsh criticism following the incident.

She said this can cause guests distress and wants to see an end to the show and others that rely on humiliation.

Damian Collins, chairman of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said TV companies "have a duty to care to the people who take part in their programmes", while Tory MP Simon Hart, who also sits on the committee, described the Jeremy Kyle Show as "car-crash TV which revels in people's awful misfortune and sometimes their vulnerabilities".

Ms Langcaster-James said she turned down an offer to work on the show as she was uncomfortable with its approach. Career crushed? Mental health endangered?

"Out of that they get short-lived celebrity, but what is the actual impact on people?"

"That is hard for contributors to experience, that is a humiliation".

A particularly tragic story has emerged out of the U.K.in the past week concerning the popular daily talk show The Jeremy Kyle Show, which is akin to US talk shows hosted by Maury Povich and Jerry Springer.

An ITV spokeswoman said: "Everyone at ITV and The Jeremy Kyle Show is shocked and saddened at the news of the death of a participant in the show a week after the recording of the episode they featured in and our thoughts are with their family and friends".

"After filming has ended all guests are seen by a member of the guest welfare team".

She told The Sun: 'They were brilliant.

"The day after recording of the show the participant will be contacted by production to carry out a welfare check and provide details of the services that have been sourced for them".
