Human beings have infiltrated the far corners of the Earth, and now, after an American man reached the deepest depths of the Pacific Ocean, it seems that we've even left our mark at the bottom of the sea. After Vescovo's record-breaking dive, other team members took four other subsequent dives to the trench.

"It is nearly indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did", Vescovo told the BBC. It's part of the Five Deeps Expedition, which is charting the ocean's five deepest areas.

Walsh watched on as the team made their historic accomplishment. Previously, the deepest dive totaled over 10,912 metres and was carried out by U.S. Navy lieutenant Don Walsh and Swish engineer Jacques Piccard in 1960.

"Now in the winter of my life, it was a great honour to be invited on this expedition to a place of my youth".

The team claims to have discovered four new species of prawn-like crustaceans called amphipods, observed a creature called a spoon worm more than 22,000 feet down and a pink snailfish at more than 26,000 feet down, BBC reported. The team also discovered brightly colored rocks on the sea floor, potentially formed by microbes, the BBC reports.

Plastic waste has reached epidemic proportions in the world's oceans, with an estimated 100 million tonnes dumped there to date, according to the United Nations.

A graphic explaining the history of human attempts made to explore the Mariana Trench. The team says scientists intend to test the deep sea creatures for plastic build-up.

In the May/June issue of Hydro International we'll publish an article about the Five Deeps Expedition. Its next stop will be the Horizon Deep in the South Pacific Ocean's Tonga Trench, which measures at just under 11,000 meters deep to stack in as the second-deepest ocean trench in the world.

"It was very disappointing to see obvious human contamination of the deepest point in the ocean", Vescovo said.

The Five Deeps Expedition uses a submarine named the DSV Limiting Factor, which is capable of withstanding 1,000 bars of pressure and is built with titanium walls. Two of the dives, including the deepest one made on 28 April, were solo dives piloted by Vescovo.

As well as working under pressure, the sub has to operate in the pitch black and near freezing temperatures.

Diving isn't Vescovo's only passion- he's also a climber.

Video clips by the Atlantic Production of Vescovo landing on ocean soil do point out an unidentified object in an otherwise barren-looking floor.

"This vehicle is effectively a reliable elevator that can transport us to any depth, in any ocean".

"We also had to design new rigs that would go inside Victor's submersible and capture every moment of Victor's dives".
