Mike Pompeo made the remarks while sitting alongside Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, at a joint press conference in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

"I conveyed that there are things that Russian Federation can do to demonstrate that these kinds of activities are a thing of the past".

"We are ready to do that if our U.S. colleagues are ready to reciprocate".

"We fundamentally do not seek a war with Iran", Pompeo said during a visit to Russian Federation, a key backer of Tehran which has blamed the current crisis on Washington's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal. The U.S. has accused Iran of threatening to attack American interests in the Middle East and suggested that Iran or Iranian proxies are behind incidents of alleged sabotage on Emirati, Norwegian and Saudi tankers in the Persian Gulf.

US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Tuesday said his country is not seeking war with Iran, despite a spike in tensions that has seen the Pentagon dispatch nuclear-capable bombers to the region. And we hope that we can continue to move forward.

"As we said before there was no collusion from our government officials and it could not be there".

"We see that there are suspicions and prejudices", Lavrov told Pompeo at the start of their talks.

Pompeo met with Putin on Monday in Russia's resort of Sochi where he sought to alleviate some of the concerns about the spiraling tensions but made clear the USA would respond to any attacks on American targets. They would also like Iran to stay in the Iran nuclear deal so that they never acquire a nuclear weapon.

"Despite the exotic nature of Mr Mueller's commission, on the whole he conducted quite an objective investigation and confirmed the absence of any collusion between the U.S. administration and Russia", Putin said.

"It's clear that such insinuations are absolute fiction", he said after the talks with his USA counterpart. "We just think being outside the deal gives us better odds than that", Hook said.

Moscow and Washington are overdue to dispel "suspicions and prejudices on both sides", Lavrov said, and to "start building a new constructive framework" of how Russian Federation and the U.S see each other.

Pompeo spoke of "truly overlapping interests" that the two countries "can build on, and most importantly, President Trump very much wants to do that".

Pompeo and Lavrov have in the past weeks called on the other's country to get out of crisis-wracked Venezuela. He also said the two sides disagree on Venezuela and urged Russian Federation to end its support for President Nicolas Maduro.

Hunt, who held talks with Maas and Le Drian on the margins of a regular European Union meeting in Brussels, expressed concern about the risks of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East if Iran were to acquire such weapons.

Hook made the remarks after The New York Times newspaper reported that the White House is reviewing military plans that could see the deployment of up to 120,000 troops to the Middle East should Iran attack USA forces or accelerate work on nuclear weapons.
