  • Greenpeace protesters hang off the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Tuesday morning

Police allege the group blockaded security who tried to stop some members abseiling off the bridge to unfurl banners, which allowed six of them to scale the fence.

Earlier in the operation ten people were arrested.

Supporters also took over a public walkway on the bridge.

They were charged with risk safety of another by climbing structure, wilfully prevent free passage of person/vessel, climb on any part of a bridge, enter enclosed land without lawful excuse.

Several others managed to climb over the edge and rappel under the main deck of the bridge.

"Ten people have so far been arrested and conveyed to Day Street and Surry Hills Police Stations to assist with inquiries".

Environment activists have abseiled down the Sydney Harbour Bridge to demand that Prime Minister Scott Morrison declares a climate emergency.

NSW Police have arrested 10 people involved in a Greenpeace climate change protest at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but three more remain dangling from the icon, holding banners.

Some were detained by security officers who called the police but three avoided detention and carried on with the planned protest.

"The protestors are joined on the ground by Australians from across the country who have had their lives turned upside down by the impacts of climate change".

"Australia is facing a climate emergency right now", Greenpeace Australia Pacific CEO David Ritter said in a statement.
