The 37-year-old saved two match points to win through 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9/7) against Borna Coric to advance to the quarter-finals after earlier easing to a straight sets win over Portugal's Joao Sousa.

It is that match against Coric that is believed to have caused Federer's injury, with him revealing after the 3-hour, 51-minute contest that he tweaked his leg after slipping on the wet baseline.

Japan's Naomi Osaka shows her hands as she meets the journalists at the Italian Open tennis tournament, in Rome, Friday, May, 17, 2019.

And for me, after the Australian Open they said that I was going to be No. 1. "I am not 100 percent physically and, after consultation with my team, it was determined that I not play", Federer said. "Rome has always been one of my favorite cities to visit, and I hope to be back next year".

There's no more news as of yet but I'm guessing he didn't want to risk further injury ahead of the French Open which starts in 9 days time.

The world number 24, a French Open quarter-finalist previous year, has not dropped a set so far on the red clay of the Foro Italico and next faces either the top-ranked Djokovic or compatriot Juan Martin del Potro.

"I tried to practice and grip my racket and I just felt this pain every time I tried to move my hand in different directions". "Well, it's been a little bit tough because we had to stay late here yesterday but it was the same for all of us, I can't complain about that. So I was like, maybe I slept on it and maybe it will go away, but it didn't". I feel like there's a big difference between saying No. 1 in the world versus No. 2.

Federer, a four-time finalist in Rome, trailed 0-4 before dropping the first set, coming back in the second and saving two match points in the third set tie-break. That's why I'm kind of confused right now because I literally woke up in the morning and couldn't move my thumb.

Halep had a chance to retake the No.1 ranking in Madrid but fell short to Kiki Bertens in the final.

Osaka also withdrew before a semifinal in Stuttgart, Germany, last month due to an abdominal injury.

Speaking after her loss in Rome, Halep cut a relaxed figure when asked about returning to Paris, where she cemented her place at the top of the game by winning her maiden major a year ago.

"I haven't really talked to everyone so don't really know the plan is yet".
