Michela Pace said she is "so, so proud to be Maltese" in her first reaction to her dramatic qualification for the Eurovision final.

The legendary songstress, 60, displayed her typically edgy style in rainbow silk co-ords as she touched down in the country ahead of Saturday's grand final.

The eight countries eliminated from the competition were Armenia, Ireland, Moldova, Latvia, Romania, Austria, Croatia and Lithuania.

Madonna has arrived in Israel after her Eurovision Song Contest performance was finally confirmed.

Laurence performed the song in the second semi-final on Thursday evening and despite earlier problems with a ball of light, the staging worked well, Dutch commentators said.

Thursday's selections were made with equal weight given to the points awarded by juries of music experts and voting in the participating countries. The country with the most points is declared the victor.

The Eurovision Song Contest final will air on BBC One on 18 May from 20:00 BST. The live show is watched by about 200 million viewers worldwide.

Israel earned the right to host after Israeli singer Netta Barzilai carried off last year's prize with her spunky pop anthem "Toy".

On May 14, her much-publicized performance came into question after the show's organizers revealed that no contract had yet been signed. Calls for performers to boycott the show over Israel's treatment of Palestinians have failed to yield tangible results.

In a Facebook comment soon after performing on stage, Michela appeared satisfied with her performance.

But the contest waded into murky waters when one of its Israel-themed promotional clips streamed at Thursday's show introduced Norway's performers prancing in what the video labelled the Judean Desert, and what most of the global community calls the West Bank, which the Palestinians claim for their future state.

"I'll never stop playing music to suit someone's political agenda nor will I stop speaking out against violations of human rights wherever in the world they may be", the singer said in a statement.

The Palestinian-led boycott movement against Israel had urged artists to skip Eurovision in Tel Aviv.
