  • There are 378 climbers permitted to scale Everest this year alongside sherpas like Kami Rita

Kami Rita was one among the 8 climbers who scaled the Everest peak on the day, opening trekking route to Everest for Spring 2019.

The sherpas, well renowned for their endurance, grit and experience at high altitudes, serve as guides for many foreign mountaineers wanting to reach the highest Himalayan points.

Kami Rita Sherpa reached the top of the 8,848-meter mountain at 7:50 a.m., Mira Acharya, a tourism ministry official, told Kyodo News by phone from the mountain's Base Camp.

The world record holder climber had admitted that although climbing was a tough task, it was a regular affair for him.

The climbing season ends in May and hundreds of climbers are now on the Everest, trying to reach the top from both the Nepali and Tibetan sides of the mountain.

Kathmandu: 49-year-old mountaineer from Nepal climbed the Mount Everest for the 23rd time on Wednesday, breaking his own record for most summits of the world's highest mountain.

Acharya said dozens of climbers are trailing Sherpa with the aim of reaching the summit Wednesday. Both of them have retired.

Majority of the hopefuls are assisted by Nepali guide, that means about 750 climbers will flock the same path to the top of 8850 metre long range in the upcoming weeks.

And at least 140 others are preparing to scale Everest from the northern flank in Tibet, according to expedition operators.

Sherpa took advantage of the first weather window of this season on the mountain.

"I am still strong and want to climb Sagarmatha 25 times", Kami had told Reuters news agency before leaving for the mountain in March referring to the Nepali name for Everest.

His father was also a professional Sherpa guide.

Perhaps most important, it is Sherpas who each year fix ropes and ladders over crevasses and icefalls that make things safer for the hundreds of climbers who will follow them.

There are mounting concerns, however, that the numbers are unsustainable, with fears of risky overcrowding as well as trash and other environmental problems.
