  • Microsoft, Sony Team Up To Work On Gaming Experiences, AI Solutions (NYSE:SNE)(NASDAQ:MSFT)

Microsoft and Sony said the two companies will explore joint development in Microsoft Azure cloud tech to support their respective game and content-streaming services. In a statement published to Microsoft's website, the companies say that this initiative in particular will include "building better development platforms for the content creator community", so at some point down the road, we might hear about Sony and Microsoft working together to improve platforms like Mixer. Sony, the current market leader in video games, lacks the global cloud computing infrastructure that will be needed to drive the coming generation of cloud-based game streaming services.

On top of that, Microsoft is now working on Project XCloud, which is aiming to allow anyone to stream console-quality games to a mobile device, PC, and other devices.

Sony and Microsoft have been games industry competitors ever since Xbox went up against the PS2, but the two companies have just announced some cloud-centric collaboration in their future. Sony already has its own streaming service, PlayStation Now, which allows users to stream PS4 exclusives on their PC.

And if you have PlayStation services running on your cloud platform, then that's a great advert to any other provider of content that you can deliver for them as well.

Semiconductors and AI will also form a basis for the strategic collaboration, integrating Sony's "cutting-edge image sensors with Microsoft's Azure AI technology" in a hybrid manner.
