  • Deadly plane crash brings world's busiest airport to halt

A small plane involved in work on a runway at Dubai International Airport crashed, killing four people and halting traffic at the world's busiest airport for international travel for almost an hour.

Dubai's worldwide airport is one of the world's busiest aviation hubs.

The exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known and it is not clear if the aircraft was taking off or landing when the crash happened.

The tail number was registered to Flight Calibration Services of Shoreham, West Sussex.

Dubai International Airport later told The Associated Press that the plane "was being used to calibrate the approach systems" at the airport.

The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority said all four people on board, three British and one South African, were killed in the crash.

Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest by international passenger traffic, was closed between 7.36pm and 8.22pm local time before reopening, said Dubai Airports.

All 300 passengers and crew survived, with 30 taken to hospital mostly with minor injuries or for precautionary check-ups.

The two year-old Diamond DA42 Twin Star airplane, registered in the United Kingdom as G-MDME, was carrying out calibration flights for terrestrial navigation systems at Dubai Airport.

The victims include three United Kingdom nationals and a South African, GCAA said in a statement.

The identities and localities of the four victims has not yet been made clear, but the Foreign Office has confirmed the incident.

The plane was operated on behalf of Honeywell, a US-based multinational involved in engineering and aerospace systems.
