  • New Zero-Day Exploit for Bug in Windows 10 Task Scheduler

Microsoft Corp. today made the May 2019 Windows Update generally available for users of Windows 10 and Windows Server, meaning both consumer and enterprise users alike can now easily obtain the upgrade.

In addition to the above there are quite a lot of changes that may be of interest to "IT Pros", as detailed on the Microsoft Tech Community blog.

If you are still running this version of Windows 10 it will reach its end of service in November.

The researcher explains that the bug is exploitable by importing legacy task files into the Task Scheduler on Windows 10.

If your device is compatible with the new feature update, but you're having problems with Windows Update, you can use the Update Assistant tool to install the Windows 10 May 2019 Update on your computer. Initially, only those who explicitly visit Windows Update and click "Check for Updates" will be offered version 1903, and even then, they'll have to explicitly choose to download and install the update.

To be generous to Microsoft, privilege escalation flaws are a dime a dozen in Windows: the software giant patches them every month in its operating system. Microsoft hasn't said when ISO files containing the full update will be available, though a "clean install" of the update doesn't appear to be as important as it's been in previous feature updates.

Those issues were solved by emergency updates on behalf of the security companies and by Microsoft temporarily blocking the Microsoft update from being visible for download if the affected endpoint solutions were present on the system.

In short, the latest Windows 10 May update v1903 brings more control over updates and greater transparency for a better update experience. The objective of System Restore is to restore the system to a point in time in which it supposedly functioned better than it does at the moment. The firm thinks the update is ready for mass consumption thanks to the "positive data and the feedback we've seen" during the longer preview phase this OS has been through. This essentially means Windows 10 users need to wait for a security fix for this particular vulnerability.

As always, make sure you create a system backup before you start the upgrade. Microsoft is being understandably cautious in the wake of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update shenanigans.
