"The group employs about 1,300 staff at 25 restaurants across the United Kingdom, including 22 under the Jamie's Italian brand, in addition to Jamie Oliver's Diner at Gatwick airport, Barbecoa and Fifteen London".

"I appreciate how hard this is for everyone affected", he said.

"I'm really angry because Jamie won't be the one looking for a job and struggling to pay his bills, it'll be poor saps like us who worked for him", one worker told the Daily Mail. "And we did exactly that", Oliver said in a separate statement.

Oliver's group has officially fallen into administration - the process whereby a troubled company calls in outside expertise to try and minimise job losses.

Administrator KPMG has closed 22 of the celebrity chef's 25 restaurants, after investment could not be secured to keep them trading.

The Jamie Oliver Group said Tuesday it had gone into administration, a form of bankruptcy protection, and appointed KPMG to oversee the process.

Worldwide operations will continue to operate outside of an insolvency.

The Jamie's Italian restaurant in York has closed after the group collapsed into adminstration.

Gerry Fitzpatrick, who operates Jamie's Dundrum under a franchise arrangement, said it is "business as usual" for the restaurant.

The celebrity chef had helped save the chain from bankruptcy a year ago by ploughing in a reported £13m of his own money.

The closure of 20 Jamie's Italian restaurants, as well as Barbecoa and Fifteen in London, will result in approximately 1,000 redundancies.

Oliver, 43, first rose to prominence in 1999 with his television programme, The Naked Chef, which was broadcast in dozens of countries. "As ever, it is the workers at the restaurant and in the supply chain who bear the heavy cost of boardroom decisions".

Writing on Twitter, Oliver said he was "deepy saddened" by the events. The Italian chain Strada shuttered a third of its restaurants at the start of 2018, and Prezzo and Carluccio's-yes, Italian food again-had to undergo restructuring.

Jamie Oliver's Australian restaurant group has already hit dire straits.

Bidois said the British hospitality industry had been in "freefall" for some time, due to intense competition, combined with rent rises, higher business rates and increasing food prices.
