To the chagrin of many, it was announced on Tuesday that Coca-Cola is reviving the oldie but baddie, "New Coke", the onetime buzzed about soda from the '80s that fizzled faster than Debbie Gibson's comeback tour.

"The partnership with Coke gives Netflix the opportunity to reach a massive audience via one of the most recognizable brands in the world in a deeply authentic way", said Netflix Head of Global Partner Marketing Barry Smyth. Happy hunting, Stranger Things fans!

"In a first-of-its-kind partnership for Netflix, the "Stranger Things" team collaborated with Coca-Cola to immerse viewers in 1980s nostalgia", the beverage giant said in a statement. Netflix presents this high-end content with no advertising. "We are doing it to create good experiences for members, to the extent the creative expression of a show can be supported by working with a brand".

"Stranger Things 3", starring Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Dacre Montgomery, and Cara Buono, premieres July 4 with new cast members Maya Hawke, Cary Elwes, Jake Busey, and Francesca Reale.

Netflix has no plans to run traditional advertisements in the middle of its programs, but it has featured consumer goods in the plots of its shows. In fact, the Coke product - which boasts a sweeter, smoother style than the regular version - received "a reaction that included boycotts, letter-writing campaigns and thousands of phone calls to its Atlanta headquarters", according to The New York Times.

Coke products have already appeared more than a dozen times in "Stranger Things", an eerie teenage drama set in a small in town during the 1980s. It should be noted that the third season of the show will take place in 1985, the same year that New Coke was initially launched.

Coca-Cola's ambitions are more modest this time around.

The drink is coming back, however, as part of a deal that will see it weaved into episodes of the third season of Stranger Things.

Even Coca-Cola admits the enormous fail in its history of New Coke. The company will also unveil limited-edition packages of original Coke with Stranger Things designs, as well as launching an ad in movie theaters.
