Plants now going extinct 500 times faster than the ‘natural’ rate

  • Plants Becoming Extinct at a Rapid Rate

Analysis of global records has revealed that almost 600 plant species have vanished from the wild since the 18th century - more than double the number of birds, mammals and amphibians that have become extinct over the same time period.

Many have been eradicated through man-made habitat loss - such as the Hieracium hethlandiae, a small yellow flower wiped out through overgrazing by sheep and quarrying on Shetland.

Compiling data from the literature, global databases, and museum specimens, Vorontsova and her colleagues surveyed more than 330,000 species to document the losses. In most cases, it can take years to declare a species officially extinct because of the landscapes that have to be scoured for any last survivors. "[The] results are enormously significant".

The study found that the world's plants have been disappearing from earth since 1900 at a rate 500 times faster than would be expected from just natural forces.

Others include the Chile sandalwood, a tree that grew on the Juan Fernandez Islands between Chile and Easter island and was heavily exploited for its scent.

"This study is the first time we have an overview of what plants have already become extinct, where they have disappeared from and how quickly this is happening", said Aelys Humphreys of Stockholm University.

A total of 571 plant species have become extinct in the wild in the last 250 years, a recent study has found, indicating the urgent need for protecting plants while preserving the balance of nature, Daily Sabah reports.

Previously, scientists have found that the Great Permian extinction 252 million years ago also began with plants.

"This understanding is the predominant time we now have a major level understanding of what vegetation have already change into extinct, where they have gotten disappeared from and the draw fast right here's occurring", she added.

Plant extinction is bad news for all species, said Dr Eimear Nic Lughadha, co-researcher and conservation scientist at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. According to the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens website, the central cause is - unsurprisingly - human activity. However extra than half of of those species were either rediscovered or reclassified as yet any other residing species, which methodology 571 are mute presumed extinct.

The authors of the study stressed that plants depend on millions of other species, including humans. The scientists expect it will help conservation in the future by highlighting what types of plants are particularly vulnerable to extinction.

To reach these conclusions, the researchers scoured every journal and plant database at their disposal, beginning with a 1753 compendium by pioneering botanist Carl Linnaeus and ending with the regularly updated IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which maintains a comprehensive list of endangered and extinct plants and animals around the world.

Dr Prefer Salguero-Gómez, of the College of Oxford, who used to be no longer section of the understanding, mentioned thought the how, where, and why of plant loss used to be of paramount importance, no longer simply for ecologists but moreover for human societies.
