Despite the fact that more than 50 percent of NY state citizens are against giving illegal aliens driver's licenses, the leftist legislature and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo forced the new law known as the "Green Light Bill" onto the Empire State late last night.

A Democratic-controlled state Senate passed the bill, though all six lawmakers from Long Island nixed it over concerns it could prove politically costly in their swing districts, the New York Post reported.

The bill is "continuing this state's trend toward favoring criminals over law-abiding citizens", New York Republican state Senator Fred Askhur said during a floor debate surrounding the bill.

NY will join at least a dozen other states that allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, becoming the second most populous state after California to take that step.

Senate Republican Leader John Flanagan said it would be a "colossal political mistake", for Democrats to pass the bill. It now goes to the governor for his signature. Cuomo signed the bill even after he asked the state's civil attorney, Solicitor General Barbara Underwood, to look at the bill for any legal weaknesses. Askhur also had suggested the bill could increase the potential for voter fraud in the state because NY does not have "voter identification laws like the majority of other states do".

"You create a driver's license for undocumented people, you just have to make sure you do it in a way that the feds don't come in the next day and access that database with the exact opposite intention", Cuomo told WAMC Public Radio.

'The legislation is well crafted and contains ample protections for those who apply for driver's licenses, ' James wrote in a statement.

"Governor Cuomo has supported this policy for over a decade". We hope the attorney general's assessment is correct'.

'If this bill is enacted and challenged in court, we will vigorously defend it....'

The law becomes effective in 180 days, meaning illegal aliens can begin applying for driver licenses in December. It will take effect before the end of the year, according to the text of the measure. "California passed a law, and they are now in litigation".

Democrats supporting the measure argue that illegal aliens learn to drive, and get tested and insured as a result, adding to overall road safety for all.

Republican lawmakers decried the bill, which they said would reward people who had violated federal immigration laws and possibly lead to voter fraud if immigrants use the licenses to try to register to vote. "This decision is incredibly irresponsible", U.S. Rep.
