Allardyce reveals he turned down Newcastle job offer

  • Sam Allardyce

Sources close to the club say Allardyce, who has been out of work since leaving Everton in May previous year, was presented with an offer after talks between senior figures at St James' Park and his representatives last weekend.

But the former England manager declined an opportunity to speak to the club.

"It never really got to the sort of talks people are suggesting".

"Well they should be anxious as he is a Geordie boy and if he gets the chance to go to Newcastle and Sheffield Wednesday don't stop him, I think he will jump at the chance", said Allardyce on talkSPORT (6:25am, Thursday, July 11th). I politely said "no". My agent contacted me, I had a think about it and a quick look at the situation and thanked them very much but (it's) not for me. "I appreciate the offer but I was surprised, I've not worked for a full season".

The club are hopeful of concluding a deal in the coming days for Bruce to succeed Rafa Benitez so he can join the squad on their pre-season tour of China, which begins on Saturday.

The respected diplomat's move has caused Britain's relations with the U.S. presidency to sink to its lowest levels in decades. But he said the trans-Atlantic relationship was "so deep and so wide that it will withstand any individual squall".

"It wasn't something I thought about for too long". I thought it'd be better to make a quick decision for everyone.

Steve Bruce has asked permission from Sheffield Wednesday to speak to Newcastle United about the Magpies' vacant managerial position, according to the Times.

Benitez departed after his contract expired, saying the Premier League club "did not share his vision".

The 58-year-old is keen on managing in the Premier League again and wants to hear what Newcastle have to offer to him.

Bruce, who spent two years at their fierce rivals Sunderland between 2009-11, is a boyhood Newcastle fan and feels he can not resist the lure of the challenge on Tyneside.
